Recipe 4: Cantina Grill Torta

If you've never eaten a Torta before, you've obviously been under a rock lately. A Torta is literally a Mexican Sandwich, made by sandwiching grilled meats, veggies, cheese, beans and spreads between two pieces of soft Torta or Bolillo bread. If the previous sentence hasn't left your mouth watering, I cannot help you in the slightest. This sandwich is so large that it could squish several smaller side dishes in the process of being laid onto the plate. It is also extremely messy, usually leaving guacamole and sour cream plastered across your shirt.
If you are ready to savor a Mexican miracle, lets get started:

(Prep Time: 5 Minutes       Cook Time: (not counting  Carne Asada cook time) 10-15minutes

Ingredients:
  • 1 Torta Roll
  • Any grilled meat, in this case Carne Asada (cooked before-hand), about a half cup
  • Refried beans
Optional Ingredients (though they will be used in this recipe)
  • Guacamole
  • Sour Cream
  • Mayonnaise
  • Jack cheese
  • Lettuce
  • Pico De Gallo
  • Chopped onions
Tools:
  • Spatula
  • Spoon
  • Steak Knife
  • Spreading tool, such as a small spatula or butter knife
Directions:
  1. Cut roll in half horizontally and brush a light layer of Mayonaise onto one side of each half of the roll
  2. Set the roll mayo-side onto a grill, griddle or pan on medium heat and allow to toast until the bread has become crispy.
  3. Flip the rolls and allow the rounded, plain side until this side has begun to brown
  4. Take roll off the grill and layer on your ingredients in this order:
      1. Grilled meat or Beans, order for these two doesn't matter as much
      2. Cheese
      3. Guacamole, Sour Cream
      4. Lettuce
      5. Pico De Gallo
      6. Onions
      7. Other half of Roll
  5. (Optional) Allow the sandwich to grill longer to melt together your sandwich or to rewarm it. This can be done on the grill or in the microwave.
  6. Slice the sandwich diagonally.
  7. Serve!
Tips:
  • Any and all grilled meats work amazingly for a Torta. This can include Carnitas, Chicken, Milenesas, Sausage, Ham, Egg, and even grilled veggies!
  • Serve it with rice and beans...do it..
  • Jalapenos and salsa can add a spicy kick to a torta
